- Material:
Stone or cast iron
- Dimensions:
About 4.5 metres tall, about 900 mm square at base
- Use:
On railways opened before 1866
- Inscription:
See below
- Date:
Not dated but made for pre-1845 railway Acts or for the 1851 Act
There are four sub-types:
- Type 4a: Stone, with a metal coat of arms affixed to the shaft of the obelisk.
Presumably made for a specific pre-1845 railway Act. No surviving inscription, but there are rows of small
holes on the plinth, which look like sockets for missing raised letters which would have formed a nine-line
inscription.
- Type 4b: Stone, with a raised coat of arms in stone as part of the shaft.
Presumably made for a specific pre-1845 railway Act. No surviving inscription, but there are rows of small
holes on the plinth, which look like sockets for missing raised letters which would have formed a nine-line
inscription.
- Type 4c: Stone, with the City's shield on the shaft and the incised inscription
"14 & 15 VIC. / C. 146." on the plinth.
- Type 4d: Cast-iron, with the raised inscription "14 & 15 VICT. / CAP. 146."
on the plinth. No shield or coat of arms. Maker's name: "FALKIRK IRON WORKS" on base of plinth below the
inscription.
