Type 5

- Form:
Obelisk, with a shield affixed to each of the four sides of
the shaft and a plate bearing the raised inscription forming each face of the base.
- Material:
Cast iron on stone plinth. Consists of a number of separate elements bolted together.
- Dimensions:
About 1.75 metres tall; base 600 mm square
- Use:
On railways opened after 1865
- Inscription:
ACT / 24 & 25 VICT / CAP 42
- Date:
No date, but post 1865
These obelisks were erected on railways opened between 1866 and 1887.
They have proved to be the least robust type of marker: a number have disappeared completely, and even where
they survive some or all of the shields and plates are missing.
